Mapping Out Your Social Media Marketing Goals

social media marketing

The first part of achieving anything in business is to set goals, it’s an important step that shouldn’t be overlooked. Setting goals will not only point you in the right direction, but will also help define the path you’ll need to take to get to where you want to be. Goals also allow you to measure your progress to see what’s working for you and what isn’t.

It can sometimes be overwhelming to manage all the different social media networks and your strategy for marketing your business on each platform. To make sure you haven’t missed any crucial steps, download my free Social Media Domination Checklist. It covers all the items you need to consider when starting to market your business with social media.

So, how do you start the process of setting goals for your business? There are three main areas to focus on…

Numbers

The simplest and most straightforward way to look at your success with social media is to measure the number of followers and subscribers you have. Over time, if you’re posting content that entertains those who visit your page, and if you’re marketing yourself well, you should discover more people following your social media pages, and interacting with your posts.

While this is the most obvious metric to measure, focusing on just the number of followers can be a mistake. There are other factors that help you understand how you’re doing and help you achieve your goals.

Engagement

The number of followers you have isn’t enough to paint a complete picture of your success. These days it’s actually quite possible to buy several thousand followers for a low price, but this doesn’t do much for your actual growth because these followers won’t be engaging with your content.

What does Engagement mean?

Engagement means that people are responding to your posts, they’re sending you direct messages, liking and sharing your comments and content. This indicates that they’re actually finding your content interesting and that makes them much more likely to buy the products you recommend or share your posts within their network of friends.

All the social media platforms have statistics & analytics platforms that allow you to see your engagement. It’s actually better to have a few highly engaged users, than it is to have thousands of unengaged users. The number of engaged users should be the number you focus on!

Sales

Now, if you were only to focus on one thing for your business, this would definitely be the number to pay attention to. The number of sales and customers you get will be a direct result of your followers, how engaged they are with your brand and ultimately leading to greater profits. However, it’s important to note that short-term sales don’t always mean long term customers, so it’s best to look at a combination of numbers, engagement and sales.
