What Automation Is and Why You Shouldn’t Fear It

/ / Business Automation

Technology has changed the way people think about companies, especially when it comes to the prospect of owning their own business. The internet is filled with a lot of potential, just waiting for the lucky team member or manager to tap into those resources and begin streamlining their processes to success. Millions of people have taken a shot at starting a business, or automating their current operations to create a whole new way of life for themselves.

Unfortunately, very few of them have actually succeeded.

While there are a number of reasons why a business fails to really take off, there is one that stands out above all others; those in management failed to learn how to automate the business and make the best use of all the technology resources available. This applies to resources within the company as well as online support services that could make the difference in how well the company succeeds.

The Trend

There is a common behavior in the business world that tends to divide business people into two categories. The first category is reserved for those who are known as visionaries.

Visionaries are the ones that come up with great ideas for products and services. Creativity is the name of the game for the visionary, as they can see the potential behind their product ideas. Unfortunately, the visionary usually lacks the practical skills needed to implement the development and distribution of that product idea to generate sales.

The second category is reserved for the implementer. The implementer is directly concerned with how a business is organized, setting proper schedules for getting things done, and in general has the background and skill set to handle the everyday operation of any business. The implementer knows a little about marketing, advertising and can handle accounting, oversee employees, and basically keep the ship moving along.

What the implementer lacks is the vision to foresee changes in the industry and come up with creative ways to stay ahead of the competition.

The most successful businesses know that you need the combination of a great idea and the resources necessary to cultivate a customer base for that great idea. They also understand the importance of making sure that everyone in the organization has the skills needed, or outsource them to trusted and reliable resources.

Business automation is all about marrying the vision with the practicalities of the business world in order to be successful. There is no great mystery to the process, however many people are intimidated by words like “automation” or “systemization”. For anyone, it is completely possible to learn how to effectively automate your business and position yourself for success in your role.

The Idea of Automating Your Business

As mentioned earlier, people start to get anxious when they hear any talk of automating business processes. Their thoughts immediately turn to the idea of an endless array of meetings that produce a mountain of action items that must be followed up on at the next meeting, which will all eventually lead to positions being terminated. In short, people see automation as a series of processes that only make things more complicated and kill the workforce.

There is a good chance that if you’re reading this, you also have this rather bleak view of automation. Before going any further, let’s define what business automation is and what it isn’t:

What Automation Is Not

An organization with automated business processes doesn’t get caught up in so many policies, procedures and meetings that leave no time for productivity. Automation is not about filling time or creating the illusion of being busy. A person taking advantage of automation is not someone who is so singularly focused that any deviation from the norm is considered harmful to the organization’s big picture.

In short, automation is not about creating a machine and being dominated by that machine. Automated processes don’t have to be complicated, function for some unknown reason, or even remain the same from one year to the next.

What Automation Is

True automation is more or less the opposite of what most people think it is. In reality, a truly automated organization has a solid functioning procedure that knows what must be done, has a way to do it, and gets the job done. When a business is fully automated, there is time to devote to other strategic matters that can really propel an organization to greatness.

With a properly automated company, the procedures put in place make sense and always have a purpose. There is no room for empty actions that stir up a lot of dust, but accomplish nothing. I’m sure at some point in your career, you’ve had to sit in a meeting where all that was done is plan the next set of meetings. With automation, there are not endless meetings to contend with, no complicated policies to observe, and no time wasted spinning the wheels.

That is not to say that every process within a properly automated company will work perfectly. There are many tasks that will still require human interaction, and foresight as there are just some conditions and edge cases that only humans can account for. Still, the majority of tasks, if organized properly, can be completed in a reasonable amount of time and leave the rest of the day to move on to more lucrative tasks, such as bringing in new customers or working on a new product.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that true automation frees you, while a lack of properly automated processes within an organization creates nothing but endless work and stifles you and your business until you and your employees are ready to move on to better opportunities.
